Most brands arrive here with four unrelated sounds already in the wild. A library track on the pre-roll. An iOS default notification. A hold tone the phone provider chose. An event playlist somebody made the morning of. Four touchpoints, four sounds, nothing carried between them. Closing that gap is the job.
Studio ZK is an Amsterdam sonic branding and music strategy studio. We work with marketing and brand teams who have already invested in a strong visual identity and want the same rigour applied to sound, across ads, product, retail and the everyday moments in between. Our clients run from cultural institutions and NGOs to FMCG brands and universities.
Four things a working sonic identity gives you:
Recognition with nothing on screen
Someone in the next room hears three seconds and knows who it is. No other brand asset does that, which is why sound is the only part of an identity that still works on radio, in a podcast, and from a phone in somebody's pocket.
An asset that appreciates
A campaign track is spent the day the campaign ends, while a sonic logo gets more valuable every time it plays, because recognition compounds with exposure. Museumvereniging's has carried three campaign years.
Holds up outside the studio
We test on a phone speaker, in a room with people talking over it, and on a television before signing anything off. Audio that only works on monitors does not work.
Guidelines and rollout
A written brand audio document: usage rules, creative rationale, and what not to do. This is the part that decides whether the identity is still recognisable in three years or dies with the agency that launched it.
How we build your sound
1. Discovery & audio audit
We start by listening, to your brand, your competitors, and every touchpoint where sound already plays a role. We map what's working, what's missing, and where the biggest opportunity lies.
2. Sonic identity design
From mood boards to demo tracks, we develop and test sonic concepts against your brand strategy until we land on a direction that's unmistakably yours.
3. Guidelines & toolkit
Every asset, from sonic logo to brand anthem, UX sounds, and curated playlists, is delivered alongside a sonic brand guideline covering usage rules, dos and don'ts, and creative rationale.
4. Rollout & training
We help you brief agencies, editors, and internal teams so your sound is applied consistently, from a 6 second social cut to a full brand film.
What does a lasting identity actually deliver?
For Museumvereniging we built one sonic signature that has since carried three separate Museumweek campaigns, including the 2020 edition that moved entirely online when the museums closed. That is where the guidelines document pays for itself: an identity that survives a change of campaign, and a change of agency.
If you work at a museum, festival or heritage organisation, sonic branding for cultural institutions is the page you want. Still deciding which asset you need? Read the difference between an audio logo, a jingle and a brand anthem. If you already have audio nobody deliberately chose, start with developing your existing audio.
Sonic branding, explained
What is sonic branding exactly?
It's the audio equivalent of your visual identity, a system of sound designed to be instantly recognizable and used consistently across every touchpoint where your brand makes sound.
How long does a project take?
A focused sonic logo can be delivered in a few weeks. A full identity, covering brand anthem, UX sound, and guidelines, typically runs 6 to 10 weeks.
Do I need a full identity or just a sonic logo?
Brands mainly active on video and social often only need a sonic logo and a short set of UX sounds. Brands with apps, retail spaces, or call centers usually benefit from the full system.
Who is sonic branding for?
Any brand with a recognizable visual identity that wants the same consistency in sound, from scale ups building their first brand system to institutions refreshing theirs.
