What is sonic branding, and why does your brand need one?
Close your eyes and think of Netflix. You probably heard something before you pictured the logo, that two-note "ta-dum." That's sonic branding doing its job: a sound so tightly linked to a brand that it triggers recognition on its own, without a single visual cue.
Sonic branding is the deliberate design of the sounds a brand uses across every touchpoint, not just an ad jingle, but a coherent system. It typically includes a few core building blocks:
The building blocks of an audio identity
Sonic logo. A short, distinctive musical signature, usually 1 to 5 seconds, that closes out a video, plays on app open, or punctuates a moment. It's the audio equivalent of a visual logo.
Brand anthem. A longer piece of original music that captures the brand's personality and can be cut down for ads, social, and events.
UX sound. The small confirmation tones, notifications, and transitions inside an app or product, designed to feel consistent with everything else the brand sounds like.
Voice & music guidelines. A reference document so anyone, an internal team, an external agency, a freelancer, can brief new audio work without drifting off-brand.
Why it actually matters
Visual branding has had decades of investment and discipline. Sound is still, for most brands, an afterthought, picked per-project rather than designed as a system. That's the opportunity: research consistently shows sound increases recall and emotional connection in ways visuals alone can't, simply because we process sound faster and more instinctively than images.
A consistent sonic identity also travels well. The same audio cue works in a 6-second Instagram story and a 30-second TV spot, across markets and languages, in a way a tagline often can't.
Where to start
You don't need to overhaul everything at once. Most of our clients start with a single sonic logo or a brand anthem, then expand into UX sound and full guidelines once the core identity is proven. The brief always starts the same way: who are you, who are you talking to, and what do you want people to feel.
